8 Reasons We Judge Ourselves and How to Let Go of the Habit

Image
“I am doing the best I can, and I am enough.” ~Unknown I don’t know about you, but I’ve recognized that historically, I’ve treated myself more harshly than anyone else ever has—and I’ve been in my share of abusive relationships. I’ve held myself to ridiculous standards, pushed myself to be and do more than I reasonably can, and beat myself up over minor mistakes, as if I didn’t deserve my own respect or compassion. As a result of this emotional abuse, I’ve ended up abusing myself physically, through bulimia, binge drinking, and smoking—all attempts to numb the pain of both my past and my punishing inner voice. I know I’m not alone with this. And I also know that it’s not our fault that we’ve been conditioned to treat ourselves so cruelly, but it is our responsibility to recognize the wounds that shaped us and do the work to heal. The first step is understanding why and when we judge ourselves, and from there taking steps to change how we talk to ourselves—which will ultimately ch...

How to Love Yourself Unconditionally

Image
Discover how to love yourself unconditionally and improve your quality of life.  To love yourself unconditionally is a seriously misunderstood concept. Before learning how to make it happen, you first need to understand what it doesn’t mean. It is NOT thinking that you’re perfect, absolutely wonderful, and should always be adored . It doesn’t involve accepting everything you think, feel, or do as okay. It doesn’t mean ignoring or being in denial about your flaws.   Not to sound simplistic, but all it means is to avoid putting pre-conditions or limits on loving, valuing, and accepting yourself. Don’t tell yourself, “I will love myself when I’m thin, smart, rich, married, a success, or a winner.” Don’t decide that you’ll love yourself unconditionally tomorrow. But that you’ll do it right now, this minute. Image
These Epicurus quotes highlight his thoughts about friendship, death, philosophy, and more. Epicurus, a Greek philosopher, turned against the popular teachings of Plato, and founded Epicureanism. Epicurus was more progressive than many of his peers, and allowed women to take part in his school, ‘The Garden.’ His teachings centered on the idea that people could live a happy life if they were self-sufficient and surrounded by friends and loved ones. I am really feeling these Epicurus quotes, as I agree with this philosophy wholeheartedly! He taught that people could find peace and freedom if they let go of the idea of divine influence and suffering. He also believed that death was the end of existence and torment in the afterlife was myth. These Epicurus quotes expand more on his ideas about friendship, death, philosophy, and material possessions. Don’t forget to also ch...

50 Homer Quotes That Reveal Much About the Elusive Bard

Image
These Homer quotes reveal how the writer felt about love and friendship, humanity, and the Gods. Back in high school, I remember being thrilled when the teacher told us we were going to read “epic poems.’ I was also confused when she handed us a large book. The Iliad and the Odyssey quickly became some of my favorite books. These ancient texts are attributed to Homer. Who was Homer, though? Almost everyone knows the story of Helen of Troy, or has heard the phrase, “the face that launched a thousand ships.” The ‘trojan horse’ is also a common reference in Western culture, and yet we know so little about this influential author. Beyond these enlightening quotes, historians have been able to shed some light on who Homer was. He was born sometime between the 12th and 8th centuries BC.
