How to Know If You Should Speak Your Mind

Image
“Integrity isn’t a morality issue; it’s an energy issue.”  ~Gay Hendricks One of the biggest questions I, and many other people I know, face as we go about our days is this: When is it worthwhile to speak our minds, and when should we keep our thoughts to ourselves? There are usually both good reasons and bad reasons for speaking out or remaining silent, so how do we know which is which? It all comes down to our own energy, and that is something we can learn how to discern. Integrity means a feeling of wholeness, or being of one piece. For me, the sensation of integrity is one of stillness and calm inside. When I’m upset by something (out of integrity) I feel a buzzing, restless energy in my body, as my thoughts race around and around, thinking about what happened and what I want to say back. This is not the time to say something! So the first rule of thumb in most situations is: 1. Wait until you feel clear. Unless you or someone else is in imminent danger, your first reaction

5 Meditation “Mistakes” That Increase Our Suffering

Image
“If your mind is empty, it is always ready for anything, it is open to everything. In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s mind there are few.” ~Shunryu Suzuki So many of us come to meditation through our suffering. Nearly everyone who has come to walk the spiritual path can spin a tale of sorrow, frustration, and often devastation. Through our life struggles and difficulties, we become conditioned into habitual patternings of mind that seem to offer us no escape, and often turn to meditation to find relief. I always say that anxiety was my first spiritual teacher and it began teaching me at a very young age. I spent a great deal of time and effort attempting to control my experience in order to limit my suffering. I’ve now come to see that the illusion of control is the root of anxiety, as our stresses are exacerbated by our inability to accept “not knowing” what will happen in life. In my early forties life handed me a situation that would event

70 Honesty Quotes on Life, Love and Success

Image
Our latest collection of honesty quotes that will help appreciate the value of being truthful. Honesty means doing things that are morally right. When one is honest, it means they’re truthful, trustworthy, sincere, loyal and fair. Honesty is one of the most important attributes in life. It gives you peace of mind where you’re not troubled by the lies you tell. By being honest, people will always trust and respect you. Besides, honesty strengthens bonds and creates more meaningful connections in relationships. If you want to be a more honest person, the first step is to be yourself. One of the reasons why people are always dishonest is because they try to be somebody they’re not. Be honest with yourself. You cannot be honest with others if you’re dishonest with yourself. Changing the things that make you lie is another step towards being a more honest person. If, for example, you lie about drinking and smoking, change the habit. You’ll then have no reason to be dishonest about it.

How to Recognize and Stop Self-Sabotaging Behavior

Image
Self-sabotage is a term that means we create problems in our everyday lives that interfere with our goals. This sounds like a counter-intuitive statement. Why would we take the time to set goals and invest emotionally in these goals’ outcomes, only to become the very reason we fail? How do you determine which behaviors are self-defeating? Maybe you already know why you self-sabotage and want to know how to stop? All these questions can be challenging to answer, but the benefits of understanding self-sabotage make doing the work worth it.  Why would you want to sabotage yourself? According to Ellen Hendriksen, Ph.D., there are six principal reasons people engage in behaviors that stand in the way of their goals. Those reasons are: Self-worth Control Perceived Fraudulence It provides a scapegoat Familiarity Boredom I have struggled with self-sabotage since I was a child, and two of her reasons stuck with me as I read over her list. Self-worth is a factor because “You feel

6 Ways to Let Go of Resentment and Anger

Image
Learn how to let go of anger and resentment so you can enjoy the beauty of life. I love to sing. As it is for every singer, there are some notes that are out of my range. When I reach my highest note and push hard to go one or two notes higher, I can’t do it. One day, a friend noticed that when I tried to hit the higher notes, I was not breathing through my diaphragm. I immediately changed my breathing and voila! My range expanded by three notes. It was easy. Maturing psychologically— letting go of resentment so as to appreciate life’s beauty and the blessings in our lives—is often attempted in a similar, misguided manner. We strain to talk ourselves out of a negative emotion , such as anger, while nonetheless still feeling that emotion strongly. We use anger-reducing strategies that work only temporarily, such as counting to 10 before we speak, or convincing ourselves that the issue is NOT worth getting upset about. We distract ourselves with more pleasant things. Or we strike

5 Facts of Life That Are Incredibly Difficult to Accept

Image
As I write this, it is difficult to get the theme song to the television show out of my mind, but it is good writing background motivation. Although, I will admit that the idea of taking the good and the bad that comes our way is part of learning the facts of life. It is accepting that things are not always going to go your way, that sometimes your greatest lessons are the hardest learned. That you will fail many more times than you will succeed, but that will make the success all that much sweeter. That you will not always get everything you want in life, but you will typically get what you need. That your problems are not as unique as you might think, even though you feel like no one could understand how different yours are. While this may sound disappointing or depressing, I hope you will learn that these facts of life have a way of shaping us into stronger and more successful people than we may have been, had we not learned the lessons associated with them. The Facts of Life T
