A Life Full of Favorites: The True Essence of Minimalism

Image
“Happiness can only be found if you free yourself from all other distractions.” ~Saul Bellow What was your favorite toy as a child? Mine was a Spider-Man action figure. The limbs were adjustable, and there was a switch on his back that made his eyes light up. I played with that toy for years, even after his fingers broke off and his switch got stuck. While I had plenty of toys as a child, this is the one I remember best. Maybe you notice a similar trend in your own children. According to a study conducted by British researchers, the average 10-year-old has 238 toys but plays with 12 daily. Even if you don’t have children of your own, maybe you are inundated with your own toys. Outdated electronics that sit on the shelf, trinkets that sit in the closet, or old sweaters that you haven’t touched in the last decade. How many toys do you play with daily, and how many get in your way and cause havoc? What if I told you these things are getting in your way of living a happier and more...

5 Reasons to Never Gossip at Work

Image
It is so tempting. Your colleagues are hovered around the Keurig sharing the latest news about the new girl in accounting: “She was out partying so late last night.”  “I bet she has a problem, like, with drinking or something.” “Do you guys think this is why she got fired from her last job?” And you just want to hop in and join them. This is good stuff! In fact, you overheard her having a fight with someone on her cell phone, so you can contribute something new, maybe even juicy. You can be the center of attention for a few moments. You are in the know. You will seem so important! Whenever you feel this way – STOP! There is absolutely no upside to engaging in office gossip, except possibly to endear yourself to other office gossips and believe me, that is not the crowd you want to run with. There is a multitude of reasons not to join this particular conversation. Here are the top five. Don’t forget to also check out these gossip quotes that will help you eliminate rumors fr...

What No One Tells You About Setting Boundaries: The Good, Bad, and Ugly

Image
“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” ~Rumi Three years back was the first time I dared to set a boundary and be assertive in a friendship, and guess what? She blocked me off her phone, and we stopped being friends. It came as a rude shock because I was quite invested in the friendship. Not only did we have good times together, I had helped her search and find a job and even babysat her kid for a long while free of charge. I felt betrayed and hurt. It made me feel like I was the one in the wrong, the bad person, and like I had no right to say what felt right to me. I admit that I was early in my journey of being assertive and learning how to set boundaries, so my skill set wasn’t the best. But despite the mayhem and chaos it caused, it was a good thing for me. We were similar in many ways, and I knew she was a lovely person. Still, I didn’t particularly appreciate that she always wanted to be in charge, acted as thoug...

How I’m Winning Over My Inner Critic by Letting It Exist

Image
“Winning the war of words inside your soul means learning to defy your inner critic.” ~Steven Furtick We all have that voice in our head, the voice that’s always negative about ourselves. Our inner voice.  Our inner critic. The one that tells us we’re not good enough, not smart enough, not attractive enough. That voice that continuously compares us to other people, so we come up lacking and feeling less than. Sometimes that voice is our own. Other times, and for some people, maybe those of us who have felt unloved or disliked by a significant person in our lives, that voice belongs to them. Then there are times when that inner critic will take on the voice of multiple people. A parent, a past lover who jilted us, and an abusive boss, for example. It can be quite the party in our heads, and not always a good one! For a while, the voice in my head belonged to my mom. It became a lot more frequent after she passed away. And a lot more persistent. Her best times to chat with me ...
